Carradale AFC
4 - 1 Southend AFC
Carradale A.F.C won its second trophy of the
2009 season on Sunday (26th July 2009) with a
convincing 4-1 victory over Southend in the
final of the Dalriada Cup played in front of a
healthy crowd at Kinloch Park.
Carradale took the lead after half an hour,
after having the best of the play during the
first half. Coming close after a Keith Mitchell
effort struck the bar, the men from the 'Dale
eventually took the lead through David
Johnstone, who scored into Southend 'keeper
Jamie Hardie's right-hand side after Mitchell
was felled in the penalty area.
Soon after, Carradale scored a second goal,
coming through Kevin Brown, the forward slotting
a low shot past Hardie, after latching onto a
flick from the midfield. Despite Southend's hard
graft, real chances were sparse, with Peter
McKerral and Ryan Gilchrist seeing their efforts
saved by Todd in the Carradale goal.
Into the second half, Carradale were again the
dominant side. Around the hour mark, David
Johnstone's corner found its way into the
Southend goal, despite the efforts of Kenneth
Galbraith on the goal-line to clear. Southend's
reply was a goal from Mark McCormick, an effort
that would merit winning any match, rather than
being the only consolation on a disappointing
day for Southend. The midfielder's strike from
25 yards out left Todd stranded in goal as it
rifled inside his left-hand post.
Carradale's fourth, an own goal, sealed the
victory, and the 2009 Dalriada Cup for
Carradale.
The match officials for Sunday's final were
referee Peter Laing, assisted by Archie Mitchell
and Stanley Irwin.
